TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF YOGASADHANA IN SCHOOL DAYS

Introduction:

TRANSFORMATIVE POWER

In the hustle and bustle of school life, filled with academic pressures, extracurricular activities, and social engagements, incorporating yoga sadhana can be a transformative and rejuvenating experience. Yoga, an ancient practice that originated in India, goes beyond physical postures; it encompasses a holistic approach to well-being, incorporating the mind, body, and spirit. Integrating yoga sadhana into school days can offer students a myriad of benefits, including improved concentration, stress reduction, and enhanced overall health. In our School, it was compulsory for every student either to attend National Cadet Course class or Yoga Practice class. Teacher helped us a lot in our yoga postures. There was no Yoga Mat at that time. Every student were given a Gunny Bag and we used to sit on it. Practicing Yoga in the open field was a unique experience.

The Essence of Yoga Sadhana:

Yoga sadhana, often referred to as a disciplined and regular practice, involves the systematic exploration of one's inner self. The multifaceted nature of yoga, which includes physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation, contributes to the comprehensive development of a student's physical and mental faculties.

Benefits of Yoga Sadhana in School:

1.     Improved Concentration and Focus: Yoga sadhana encourages students to be present in the moment, fostering heightened awareness and concentration. The practice of mindfulness through various yoga techniques can significantly enhance a student's ability to focus during lectures, exams, and other academic activities. The calm and centered state achieved through yoga can translate into improved academic performance.

2.     Stress Reduction: School days are often synonymous with stress, whether it be due to exams, peer pressure, or extracurricular commitments. Yoga sadhana provides an effective antidote to stress by promoting relaxation and mental well-being. The controlled breathing techniques (pranayama) incorporated in yoga help regulate the nervous system, reducing stress levels and promoting a sense of inner calm.

3.     Enhanced Physical Health: The sedentary nature of academic life can take a toll on a student's physical health. Yoga asanas offer a solution by promoting flexibility, strength, and overall physical fitness. Integrating yoga into the school routine contributes to better posture, improved circulation, and a strengthened immune system, fostering a foundation for lifelong health.

4.     Emotional Resilience: Adolescence is a time of emotional turbulence, and yoga sadhana equips students with tools to navigate these challenges. Through mindfulness and self-reflection, students can develop emotional resilience, learning to manage stress, anxiety, and peer relationships more effectively. The holistic approach of yoga fosters emotional intelligence, a crucial skill for personal and interpersonal growth.

5.     Cultivation of Discipline: Yoga sadhana requires commitment and regular practice, instilling a sense of discipline in students. The consistency required in maintaining a yoga routine parallels the discipline needed for academic success. This aspect of yoga can have a positive ripple effect on a student's overall approach to responsibilities and commitments.

Practical Implementation in Schools:

1.     Incorporating Yoga in Physical Education Curriculum: Schools can integrate yoga into their physical education curriculum, offering students the opportunity to experience the benefits of yoga sadhana. Trained yoga instructors can lead sessions tailored to the specific needs of students, focusing on aspects such as stress reduction, concentration, and physical well-being.

2.     Yoga Clubs and Extracurricular Activities: Establishing yoga clubs or extracurricular activities within schools creates a space for students to voluntarily engage in yoga sadhana. These clubs can provide a supportive community, fostering a sense of camaraderie among students interested in exploring the transformative aspects of yoga together.

3.     Mindfulness Workshops: Schools can organize mindfulness workshops that incorporate yoga techniques. These workshops can be designed to address specific challenges students face, such as exam stress or peer pressure. Mindfulness practices can be seamlessly integrated into the school day through short sessions or guided meditation breaks.

Conclusion:

The incorporation of yoga sadhana in school days is a holistic approach to education that recognizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By providing students with the tools to navigate the challenges of school life, yoga contributes to their overall development, fostering resilience, focus, and a positive attitude. As schools increasingly recognize the importance of holistic education, the integration of yoga sadhana emerges as a valuable investment in the well-being and success of students, setting the stage for a lifetime of health and fulfillment.

WHERE AND HOW TO SIT FOR OPTIMAL YOGIC BENEFITS

Introduction:

While discussing Pranayama in my earlier posts/pages, I discussed in a nutshell about the Pranayama but I have not discussed about the sitting postures and where to sit.  Since, that was my preliminary knowledge during my School days, but here I am dwelling upon my past experience and knowledge. Here, I may be sure that the readers will be satisfied to read this article on “Where to sit and how to sit” for Yoga sadhana.

WHERE TO SIT FOR YOGA SADHANA:

In Chapter 6 and Sloka 11 of The Bhagavat Gita which is the ultimate guide book Yoga sadhana respected by all Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and other communities of people throughout the world for performing Yogasadhana where Lord Krishna said,

Suchau deshe pratisthyapa sthiram asanam atmana

Natyuchchhrityam nati-nicham chailajina kushottaram”.

The meaning of the Sloka - the seat should be placed in a sanctified place, neither high nor low  but should be a flat place where there will be no fear of falling down and insect attack and be placed first a Deer skin, Kush grass and a Silk cloth where the energy gained by your body can not be transferred to the earth.

In the initial stage of Yoga sadhana, the place and sitting arrangement creates an impact on the mind and soul. Later even in an impure place, the Yogis able to achieve internal purity of the mind and soul. But for the new practitioners, clean surroundings help in cleaning the mind. Now, why we use Deer skin? The Deer Skin is used to prevent poisonous snakes and scorpions while the Yogis are absorbed in meditation. The Kush mat is used for insulating the temperature from the ground and Silk Cloth is used as an energy insulator.

HOW TO SIT FOR YOGA SADHANA:

In Chapter 6 and sloka 12 and 13, the Lord Krishna is saying to his disciple Arjuna as:

“ Tatraikagram mana kritva yata chittendriya kriya,

Upavishyasane yunijyad yogam atma vishuddhye;

Samam Kaya shiro grivam dhyaranna chalam sthira,

Samprekshya nasikagram svam dishash chanavolakayan.”

The meaning of the above sloka is, the practitioners should sit firmly on his prepared sit and strive to purify the mind by meditation with one pointed concentration, controlling his other thoughts and activities. The practitioners must have to hold the body, head and neck in a straight line (90 degree angle from the seat) and look at the tip of the nose without allowing the eyes to divert.

The Practitioners should preferably sit in Lotus Pose so that his body can be kept firm and straight.

Conclusion:

In today’s world, such type of places are very difficult to find out and therefore the interested people are rushing towards the hills, jungles, caves and lonely places where they can perform. But most of the seekers can not afford. For them, a separate room from a short distance from their house be selected for such practices. Now-a-days, Deer Skin, Kush Mat and Silk Cloth is not available for environmental protection, here Cloth Yoga Mat can be used for practice.

VISH YOGA - WHY LIFE FEELS DELAYED BUT NOT DENIED

Introduction

In Vedic astrology, planetary combinations play a major role in shaping human destiny. Some Yogas are considered highly auspicious, while others are believed to create obstacles and delays in life. Vish Yoga is one such inauspicious planetary combination that is often discussed with concern. The word “Vish” literally means poison, symbolizing slow-acting challenges that affect personal, professional, and emotional aspects of life.

This article explains what Vish Yoga is, how it is formed, its effects, and astrological as well as spiritual remedies—all in a balanced and practical manner.

What Is Vish Yoga?

Vish Yoga is formed when Saturn (Shani) is placed 12th, 2nd, 5th, 7th, or 10th from the Moon in a person’s birth chart (Janma Kundali).

Since the Moon represents the mind, emotions, and mental stability, Saturn’s influence on these specific positions can create stress, delays, fear, and emotional heaviness. Unlike sudden misfortunes, Vish Yoga works subtly, creating long-term struggles rather than instant crises.

Planetary Logic Behind Vish Yoga

  • Moon symbolizes sensitivity, intuition, and mental peace
  • Saturn represents discipline, karma, delay, responsibility, and hardship

When Saturn influences the Moon unfavorably, it can suppress emotional expression and create mental pressure. This does not mean life becomes unbearable, but progress often feels slow, effort-heavy, and mentally exhausting.

Effects of Vish Yoga in Life

1. Mental and Emotional Challenges

People affected by Vish Yoga may experience:

  • Overthinking and anxiety
  • Fear of failure
  • Emotional suppression
  • Loneliness even in social settings

Saturn’s cold energy restricts the Moon’s emotional flow.

2. Career and Financial Delays

Vish Yoga may lead to:

  • Slow professional growth
  • Repeated obstacles despite effort
  • Delayed recognition or promotions
  • Financial instability in early years

Success usually comes late but solid, especially after maturity.

3. Relationship Difficulties

This yoga can create:

  • Emotional distance in relationships
  • Misunderstandings with spouse or family
  • Fear of emotional vulnerability

People may appear strong externally but feel emotionally guarded internally.

4. Health and Energy Levels

Although not always severe, Vish Yoga may influence:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Stress-related issues
  • Sleep disturbances

Mental stress often manifests physically if not managed consciously.

 5. Is Vish Yoga Always Harmful?

No. This is a common misconception.

The final result of Vish Yoga depends on:

  • Strength of the Moon
  • Placement and dignity of Saturn
  • Presence of benefic aspects (Jupiter, Venus)
  • Overall chart balance

A strong Moon or well-placed Saturn can reduce negative effects significantly. In some cases, Vish Yoga makes a person disciplined, patient, and spiritually mature.

6. Vish Yoga and Spiritual Growth

Interestingly, many astrologers believe Vish Yoga has a hidden spiritual purpose. Saturn pushes individuals toward:

  • Self-discipline
  • Detachment
  • Inner reflection
  • Karmic cleansing

People influenced by Vish Yoga often turn toward yoga, meditation, mantra chanting, or spiritual philosophy, especially after facing repeated worldly disappointments.

7. Remedies for Vish Yoga

1. Strengthening the Moon

  • Practice meditation and breath awareness
  • Spend time near water bodies
  • Chant “Om Chandraya Namah”
  • Maintain emotional hygiene and routine

2. Pacifying Saturn

  • Chant “Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah”
  • Practice self-discipline and service
  • Respect elders and the underprivileged
  • Observe ethical conduct

3. Yogic and Spiritual Practices

Yogic practices help balance Saturn-Moon energy:

  • Hatha Yoga for grounding
  • Pranayama (especially Nadi Shodhana)
  • Yoga Nidra for emotional healing
  • Mindfulness meditation

These practices stabilize the mind and reduce Saturn’s mental heaviness.

4. Lifestyle Remedies

  • Avoid emotional suppression
  • Maintain regular sleep cycles
  • Accept delays without frustration
  • Focus on long-term goals

Saturn rewards patience and consistency.

8. Vish Yoga -vs- Other Negative Yogas

Unlike intense doshas such as Kemadruma Yoga or Shrapit Yoga, Vish Yoga:

  • Works slowly
  • Does not destroy life completely
  • Allows growth through effort and maturity

It is more about learning karmic lessons than punishment.

9. Conclusion:

Vish Yoga is not a curse but a karmic test. It challenges emotional strength, patience, and resilience. With awareness, discipline, and spiritual alignment, its negative effects can be transformed into long-term stability and wisdom.

In many cases, people influenced by Vish Yoga emerge as emotionally mature, spiritually inclined, and deeply grounded individuals later in life.

FROM THE MAT TO PLATE: WHOLESOME DIET FOR YOGA PRACTITIONERS FROM CHILDHOOD TO ADULTHOOD

In our childhood days, my parents usually offered us Milk which was not at all desirable at that time. Even at times they forced me to drink at-least a glass of milk every day. Still now I am taking a glass of Milk every day with my breakfast. Since I was practicing Yoga during my school days along with my studies, my parents taught me some important lifestyles for performing a better practice and better result in studies. They told me that if I do not take a balanced diet how can I grow faster. I asked them what type of food is required for a balanced diet? They told us that a balanced diet contains protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. A combination of grains, pulses, fresh fruits and sufficient fresh vegetables with some milk is required for Wholesome diet.

Every night I was sleeping with my grandmother, she usually used to tell various new Slokas from the Bhagavat Gita since she was a versatile woman with vast knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita, The Ramayana, The Mahabharata and various Puranas. Tonight was the topic about what Lord Krishna told to his disciple Arjuna regarding the food to be taken for Yoga Practitioners.

“Ayuh-sattava-balarogya -sukha-priti-vivardhanah

Rashya-snigdha-sthira-hridya-aharah-sattvika-priyah”

The meaning of the above sloka is:

Enhancing life, strength, health, happiness and affection,
Flavors that are juicy, unctuous, firm, pleasing to the heart.

These foods are loved by pure disposition.

Therefore, a vegetarian diet is beneficial for cultivating the qualities of the mode of goodness that are conducive for Yoga Practitioners and for spiritual development. This has been echoed by many prominent Philosophers.

As per Pythagoras, O my fellow men, do not defile your bodies with sinful foods. We have corn and we have apples bending down the branches with their weight. There are vegetables that can be cooked and softened over the fire. The earth affords a lavish supply of riches, of innocent foods, and offers you banquets that involve no bloodshed or slaughter; only beasts satisfy their hunger with flesh, and not even all of those, because horses, cattle, and sheep live on grass.”

George Bernard Shaw said, “I do not want to make my stomach a graveyard of dead animals”.

Conclusion : Adopting a vegetarian diet is an important pre-requisite for yoga practitioners as it aligns with the philosophy of ahimsa, or non-violence, central to yogic principles. A plant-based diet promotes physical vitality, mental clarity, and spiritual harmony, fostering a deeper connection between the practitioner and their environment. By choosing compassion over cruelty, yogis enhance their Cthe interconnectedness of all living beings. A vegetarian diet thus becomes an integral component, fostering a holistic approach to yoga that extends beyond the mat and contributes to personal well-being and global ethical consciousness.

WHAT ARE BANDHAS AND HOW DO THEY HELP AWAKEN KUNDALINI?

Benefits and Drawbacks Explained

Introduction

In classical yoga, awakening Kundalini is not about force or instant transformation—it is about preparation, balance, and inner discipline. One of the most important preparatory tools described in Hatha Yoga texts is Bandha. Often misunderstood as mere physical muscle locks, Bandhas work on a deeper energetic level, influencing prana (life force) and the subtle nervous system. This article explains what Bandhas are, how they support Kundalini awakening, and their practical benefits and possible drawbacks.

What Are Bandhas?

The Sanskrit word Bandha means “lock,” “seal,” or “bind.” In yoga, Bandhas are intentional muscular engagements designed to direct and regulate pranic energy within the body.

Bandhas are not random contractions. They are precise neuromuscular actions performed with awareness, breath control, and mental focus. Traditional Hatha Yoga texts describe three primary Bandhas:

  • Mula Bandha – Root lock (pelvic floor)
  • Uddiyana Bandha – Abdominal lock
  • Jalandhara Bandha – Throat lock

When practiced individually or together as Maha Bandha, they act as energetic valves that guide prana upward through the central energy channel (Sushumna Nadi).

How Bandhas Help Awaken Kundalini

Kundalini energy is described as a dormant spiritual potential located at the base of the spine. Bandhas play a supportive role in awakening this energy by removing energetic leaks and stabilizing upward movement.

Here’s how Bandhas contribute:

  • Prevent downward dissipation of prana, especially through the pelvic region
  • Increase intra-abdominal and spinal pressure, supporting upward energy flow
  • Stimulate dormant nerve plexuses, corresponding to chakras
  • Prepare the nervous system for higher states of awareness

Rather than “forcing” Kundalini, Bandhas create the right internal conditions for awakening to occur safely and naturally over time.

Key Benefits of Practicing Bandhas

1. Improved Energy Regulation

Bandhas help conserve vital energy and reduce unnecessary energy loss, especially during pranayama and meditation.

2. Stronger Core and Pelvic Stability

Physically, Bandhas enhance pelvic floor strength, abdominal tone, and spinal support—important for posture and longevity.

3. Enhanced Pranayama and Meditation

Breath retention (kumbhaka) becomes more stable when Bandhas are applied correctly, leading to deeper meditative absorption.

4. Nervous System Balance

Regular Bandha practice improves parasympathetic response, reducing stress and mental restlessness.

5. Gradual Spiritual Sensitivity

Practitioners often report heightened body awareness, emotional clarity, and inner stillness over time.

 Possible Drawbacks and Risks

1. Overexertion or Incorrect Practice

Forcing Bandhas can lead to pelvic tension, digestive discomfort, or breath strain.

2. Psychological Imbalance

Premature Kundalini stimulation without grounding practices may cause anxiety, insomnia, or emotional instability.

3. Not Suitable for Everyone

People with high blood pressure, hernia, pregnancy, or recent surgeries should avoid or modify Bandha practices.

4. Ego-Driven Practice

Practicing Bandhas with the goal of “quick awakening” often leads to imbalance rather than growth.

Best Practices for Safe Bandha Training

  • Learn Bandhas gradually, starting with breath awareness
  • Practice on an empty stomach
  • Combine with grounding asanas and relaxation
  • Avoid long breath retention in the beginning
  • Seek guidance from an experienced yoga teacher

Bandhas should support awareness—not dominate the practice.

Bandhas in Classical Yoga Texts

Ancient texts like the Shiva Samhita, Gheranda Samhita, etc. describe Bandhas as essential tools for mastering prana and preparing the body for higher yogic states. These texts emphasize discipline, patience, and ethical living alongside physical techniques.

 Conclusion

Bandhas are subtle yet powerful yogic tools that bridge the physical and energetic body. When practiced with awareness and humility, they help stabilize prana, deepen meditation, and gently prepare the system for Kundalini awakening. However, like all advanced yogic practices, Bandhas require respect, proper guidance, and inner maturity. True awakening is not an event—it is a process of alignment.

CHAKRA YOGA : A JOURNEY THROUGHY ENERGY CENTERS

In the realms of spiritual practice, Chakra Yoga stands out as a beacon of internal illumination and balance. At its core, Chakra Yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on activating and balancing the seven chakras, which are considered to be the energy centers of the body. This ancient practice is believed to enhance well-being by unblocking the energy pathways, thus allowing life force, or "prana," to flow freely throughout the body.

Chakra Yoga incorporates various techniques, including specific asanas (yoga poses), pranayama (breath control), meditation, and mantras, each tailored to target the chakras. Starting from the base of the spine and moving to the crown of the head, these energy centers include the Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus Chakra, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, Third Eye Chakra, and Crown Chakra. Each chakra is associated with different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Practicing Chakra Yoga regularly can lead to profound changes in one's life. It's not just about physical fitness; it's a holistic approach that addresses the mind, body, and spirit. By focusing on these energy centers, practitioners often report improved emotional stability, increased clarity of thought, and a sense of peace and contentment. Moreover, Chakra Yoga can help alleviate physical ailments related to blockages in these energy centers, promoting overall health.

One of the unique aspects of Chakra Yoga is its accessibility. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced yogi, there are poses and practices within Chakra Yoga that can be adapted to your level. It encourages a personal journey, allowing individuals to explore and connect with their inner selves at their own pace. This aspect of Chakra Yoga makes it a highly personal and introspective practice, differing significantly from more physically demanding styles of yoga.

Incorporating Chakra Yoga into one's routine can be a transformative experience. It's advisable to start with guidance from a qualified instructor who can provide insights into the proper techniques and sequences for activating and balancing each chakra. Additionally, integrating mindfulness and meditation into the practice can enhance the benefits, leading to a deeper connection with oneself and the universe.

Chakra Yoga is more than just a series of exercises; it's a path to discovering one's potential and unlocking inner peace. By harmonizing the chakras, it facilitates a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth, leading to a balanced and fulfilling life. It encourages practitioners to look inward, fostering self-awareness and compassion towards oneself and others.

My Experience

Embracing Chakra Yoga has been a transformative journey for me. Initially drawn to it out of curiosity, I soon discovered its profound impact on my overall well-being. Each session left me feeling more grounded and centered, and I gradually began to notice a shift in my perspective and attitude towards life.

Focusing on each chakra allowed me to address specific areas of my life where I felt imbalances. Through Chakra Yoga, I gained insights into the interconnectedness of my physical health, emotional well-being, and spiritual growth. It taught me the importance of harmony within myself and how it reflects in my interactions with the world around me.

My journey with Chakra Yoga has been deeply personal and rewarding. It has provided me with tools to navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience. The practice has become a sanctuary for me, a space where I can tune into my inner self and find peace amidst the chaos of the outside world.

In conclusion, Chakra Yoga is more than just a practice; it's a way of life. It invites us to explore the depths of our being and unlock our true potential. Through this journey, we can achieve a state of balance and harmony that resonates beyond the yoga mat, influencing every aspect of our lives. My experience with Chakra Yoga has been incredibly fulfilling, and I encourage anyone seeking a deeper connection with themselves to embark on this beautiful journey.

DISCOVERING THE ESSENCE OF YIN YOGA

A Path to Physical and Mental Harmony

Yin Yoga stands out as a peaceful and introspective yoga practice, distinguished by its emphasis on prolonged stretching and calming techniques. In contrast to more vigorous yoga styles, Yin Yoga entails maintaining postures for extended durations, usually between three to five minutes. This distinctive form of yoga targets the body's deeper connective tissues, including ligaments, bones, and joints, which are typically less engaged in more active exercise regimes.

The Advantages: Beyond Flexibility Yin Yoga's most notable feature is its ability to enhance flexibility and mobility. However, its advantages are much more comprehensive. Yin Yoga serves as an ideal remedy for stress and anxiety, fostering profound relaxation and a serene state of mind. Additionally, this yoga style promotes the circulation of energy (chi) within the body, leading to improved organ functioning and heightened emotional well-being.

Begin your journey with Yin Yoga?

Start with these essential poses:

1.     Caterpillar Pose This forward bend-like pose is superb for stretching the spine and hamstrings. Sit with your legs straight, then bend forward from the hips, allowing your back to curve and hands to rest comfortably.

2.     Butterfly Pose Great for opening the hips, the Butterfly Pose involves sitting with the soles of your feet together, knees dropped to the sides. Lean forward to intensify the stretch, releasing tension from your hips and lower back.

3.     Sphinx Pose For a gentle backbend, try the Sphinx Pose. Lie face down and support your upper body with your elbows. This pose stretches the chest, lungs, shoulders, and abdomen, and stimulates abdominal organs.

4.     Dragon Pose Similar to a low lunge, the Dragon Pose is an intense hip and groin stretch. Place one leg forward with the knee over the ankle and extend the other leg behind. It also targets the hip flexors and quadriceps.

5.     Reclining Twist Lying on your back, bring your knees to your chest, then gently drop them to one side while turning your head in the opposite direction. This pose relaxes the spine and aids in body detoxification.

Incorporating Yin Yoga into Your Daily Life Adding Yin Yoga to your daily routine can be incredibly beneficial. Practice in a serene setting, concentrating on your breathing and body sensations. Yin Yoga is about achieving tranquility and being fully present. Use props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks for body support and to enhance your practice.

Conclusion: Embarking on a Tranquil Journey Yin Yoga is not just about performing poses; it's a path to finding balance and harmony within your body and mind. Whether your goal is to increase flexibility, alleviate stress, or simply seek a peaceful moment in a hectic schedule, Yin Yoga offers a means to these ends. Embrace its slow, reflective nature and witness the significant impact it can have on your life."
